Baroque covers roughly 1600–1730 European court dress — the era of the early Sun King at Versailles, the Cavalier portraits of Van Dyck, the rich domestic interiors of Vermeer, the swagger of Rubens. Compared to the Rococo that followed, Baroque is darker, heavier and more theatrically dramatic: deep jewel-toned velvets and brocades shot through with gold and silver thread, voluminous slashed sleeves with paned cuffs, broad lace collars (rabats and Vandyck collars), low square necklines, full curling ringlet hair (often wigged for men), thigh-high cuffed boots and feathered Cavalier hats, knee-length petticoat breeches for men. The aesthetic survives today as a touchstone for Dolce & Gabbana's recurring Baroque-print collections, Moschino runway camp, drag, opera and ballet costume departments, and a small wave of gilded-maximalist interiors and fashion content. Sometimes referenced under 'Baroquecore'.

Not Rococo — Baroque is the heavier, darker 17th-century court style of Versailles' first half; Rococo is the lighter, pastel, asymmetrical successor that emerged from ~1730.
