Grailed in Australia: What Sellers Need to Know

3 min read

Grailed is one of the biggest marketplaces for menswear, streetwear, and designer fashion. It's US-based, but Australian sellers can absolutely use it. There are a few things to keep in mind around shipping, currency, and buyer expectations.

Is Grailed Available in Australia?

Yes. Grailed is a global marketplace and accepts sellers from Australia. You can create a seller account, list items, and sell to buyers worldwide. There's no restriction on Australian accounts.

That said, the majority of Grailed's buyer base is in the US, with a smaller presence in Europe and Asia. Most of your sales will likely ship internationally, which affects your pricing and shipping strategy.

Pricing and Currency

Grailed lists all prices in US dollars (USD). As an Australian seller, you'll set your prices in USD, and buyers pay in USD. This means you need to think about exchange rates when pricing your items.

At the current AUD/USD rate, a $200 USD sale would net you roughly $300 AUD before fees (rates fluctuate, so always check the current rate). Your payout will be converted to AUD by PayPal or your payment provider, and there's typically a small conversion fee (around 2-3%).

Factor this into your pricing. If you need $200 AUD from a sale, work backwards from the current exchange rate plus fees to set your USD price.

Fees for Australian Sellers

Grailed's fees are the same regardless of where you're based:

  • Commission: 9% of the sale price
  • Payment processing: 2.9% + US$0.30

On top of this, you'll cop a currency conversion fee when funds are converted from USD to AUD. Budget for roughly 14-15% total between Grailed's fees and the currency conversion.

Shipping from Australia

This is the biggest consideration for Australian Grailed sellers. You'll be shipping internationally for most orders, primarily to the US.

Australia Post International Options

  • Standard International: Starts around $20-25 AUD for a 500g parcel to the US. Transit time is 6-10 business days.
  • Express International: $35-50+ AUD for faster delivery (3-6 business days).
  • Economy Air: Cheapest option at around $15-18 AUD for light items, but slower (10+ business days).

Shipping Tips

  • Always use tracking: Grailed requires tracking for seller protection. Never ship without it.
  • Be upfront about location: Mention in your listing that you're shipping from Australia and include estimated delivery times. Buyers appreciate transparency.
  • Price shipping separately: Most Grailed sellers charge shipping on top. Factor in actual postage costs rather than offering flat rates that might leave you out of pocket on heavier items.
  • Customs declarations: You'll need to fill out customs forms for international parcels. Declare the actual value of the goods.

Payouts

Grailed uses PayPal for payments. Funds go to your PayPal account, where you can hold them in USD or convert to AUD and withdraw to your Australian bank account.

PayPal's conversion rate is typically 2-3% worse than the mid-market rate. You can reduce this by using a service like Wise to receive USD and convert at a better rate, though this requires additional setup.

What Sells Well from Australia

Australian Grailed sellers tend to do well with:

  • Australian brands: Ksubi, Gorman, Venroy, P.E Nation. These have strong international appeal but aren't easy to find outside AU.
  • Vintage finds: Australian op shops still have incredible stock compared to the US, where vintage is heavily picked over. Unique vintage pieces from AU sellers stand out.
  • Streetwear: Supreme, Palace, Nike collaborations. These sell globally regardless of seller location.
  • Designer at a discount: If you can source designer pieces at AU prices (particularly during sales), the USD conversion often works in your favour.

Is It Worth It?

Grailed gives Australian sellers access to a massive international buyer base that's specifically looking for fashion. The trade-offs are international shipping costs and currency conversion fees. For higher-value items ($100+ USD), the economics work well. For cheaper items, the shipping costs can eat into your margins.
