Club Kids were a small but enormously influential late-1980s and early-1990s New York City nightlife scene built around promoter Michael Alig and the Limelight, Tunnel, and Palladium nightclubs. The look was deliberate spectacle: outfits constructed from latex, plastic, fabric scraps, foam, prosthetics, and found objects; faces painted as alien, animal, or character; wigs in any shape; platform boots up to the knee; and bodies treated as performance art. Members like Richie Rich, Amanda Lepore, Jenny Talia, Walt Cassidy (Waltpaper), and James St James turned themselves into walking exhibitions for the camera and the dancefloor. The scene burned out around 1996 with Alig's conviction for the murder of Andre Melendez, but its visual influence has been seismic — Lady Gaga, Heatherette, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY, and the entire 'avant-garde club kids' TikTok aesthetic of the 2020s sit downstream. Club Kids style is treated today as both serious art-historical reference and as Halloween shorthand for any outsider-glamour outfit.
