Manba (sometimes Yamanba, named after the witch-hag of Japanese folklore) is the most extreme branch of Ganguro. It reached its peak around 2003–2004 and pushed every Ganguro element further: even darker bronzer, white concealer extended across the cheeks and bridge of the nose, neon eyeshadow stacked above and below the eye, multicoloured hair extensions twisted into wild candy-coloured cascades, and the signature white silicone-flower hair clips. Wardrobes leaned on Cocolulu and Alba Rosa neon, layered tropical prints, tutus, plush mascot keychains and platform boots that could clear 30 centimetres. Manba was always a small subculture but its visual language has had outsized influence on later kei subcultures and on contemporary maximalist Tokyo street style.

Not Ganguro — Manba is the maximalist evolution with white-flower hair clips, neon eyeshadow and rainbow extensions; Ganguro is more restrained, bronzer-only with bleached blonde or silver hair.
