About

Hyperpop took shape in the late 2010s through the PC Music label (A.G. Cook, SOPHIE, Hannah Diamond) and the surrounding cluster of Charli XCX collaborations that culminated in Pop 2 in 2017. The 2019 release of 100 gecs' 1000 gecs and the launch of Spotify's Hyperpop playlist in 2020 pulled the genre into mainstream visibility. The visual identity is post-Tumblr maximalism: blown-out colour, intentional JPEG artefacts, exaggerated 3D-rendered objects, and a warped take on Y2K. Fashion translation favours platform boots, cyber-Y2K mesh, asymmetric haircuts in shock colours, plastic jewellery, neon bows, and DIY upcycled pieces. The aesthetic has cross-pollinated heavily with TikTok 'cyber-y2k' trends, with Depop tags for 'hyperpop,' 'cybery2k,' and 'mcbling' moving in tight rotation.

Not vaporwave — hyperpop is bright, accelerated, and pop-structured, while vaporwave is slowed, ironic, and ambient.
