Dolly Kei is a Japanese fashion aesthetic codified through Tokyo's Grimoire boutique (opened 2008 by Hitomi Nomura) that imagines the wardrobe of an antique storybook doll come to life. It draws on Eastern European folk costume, German and Russian fairy tales, Victorian and Edwardian silhouettes, Middle Eastern textiles and the dustiness of dimly lit antique shops. Outfits are layered: long printed skirts over petticoats, lace-trimmed blouses, tapestry vests, hand-embroidered cardigans, religious medallions, antique watch chains and turban headwraps. The palette is muted and rich — burgundy, antique gold, ivory, rust, deep green. Dolly Kei flourished briefly through the early 2010s, ebbing as Grimoire shifted focus, but remains a touchstone for Tokyo vintage culture.
