Yume-kawaii (literally 'dream cute') is a Japanese kawaii subgenre that surged in early-2010s Harajuku as an evolution of fairy-kei, leaning even harder into a pastel-rainbow, magical-girl, dream-world aesthetic. The wardrobe is built around cotton-candy gradients, plush textures, unicorns and magical-girl motifs, fluffy animal-ear hoods, sparkly star and heart accessories, and rainbow hair. Where fairy-kei references 1980s American children's toys, yume-kawaii references the saturated colour palette of magical-girl anime (Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Tokyo Mew Mew) and the visual world of childhood dreams. The brand Spank! and shops in Harajuku's LaForet building helped codify the look, and it has continued to influence Pinterest and TikTok pastel-cute content into the 2020s. It overlaps with fairy-kei and decora but is distinguished by its specifically rainbow-pastel, dream-themed motif palette.
