About
Punk fashion emerged in the mid-1970s in London and New York as the visual language of anti-establishment punk rock. Vivienne Westwood, working with Malcolm McLaren (then-manager of the Sex Pistols) at their shops SEX and Seditionaries on King's Road, designed the wardrobe that defined the movement: bondage trousers, ripped t-shirts with anarchic slogans, mohair jumpers, leather jackets adorned with metal chains and safety pins, tartan kilts, and the infamous Destroy t-shirt. Punk's visual codes: torn and DIY-altered clothing, safety pins as both fasteners and decoration, studded leather, mohawks and dyed hair, tartan, combat boots, band patches, anti-fashion construction. Punk has had continuous revivals.
Not Pop Punk — Punk is anti-establishment 1970s rebellion; Pop Punk is brighter, skater-influenced 2000s mainstream teen styling.
