The mass cultural moment began in the 1930s, peaked through the 1950s and early 1960s with mom-and-pop tiki bars across America, and has been periodically revived from the 1990s onwards. The fashion vocabulary is bright tropical-print Hawaiian shirts (aloha shirts), tiki dresses with floral or palm prints, sarongs, leis, hibiscus hair flowers, wedge sandals, raffia and bamboo accessories, exotic-print swimsuits and the broader 1950s-pin-up-meets-tropical-resort silhouette.
