Bogan is an Australian (and to a lesser extent New Zealand) cultural identity that names a working-class, often suburban or regional, way of dressing and living. The term started as a slur in the 1980s but has been steadily reclaimed — Bogan-pride iconography is now sold ironically and unironically across Australia, and prominent Australians (Shane Warne, Karl Stefanovic, Pauline Hanson) have been claimed as Bogan exemplars. The visual: flannel shirts (often unbuttoned over a singlet), Hard Yakka or King Gee work pants or footy shorts, ute-driving thongs (flip-flops), AC/DC or Bonds singlets, mullets, southern-cross tattoos, and a VB or XXXX stubby in a stubby-holder. Footwear ranges from RM Williams boots to Nike high-tops to thongs in any weather. The bogan visual has been continually re-energised through Australian TV (Kath & Kim, Bogan Hunters), through music (Cosmic Psychos, Amyl and the Sniffers), and through a recent TikTok generation reframing 'bogan-core' as authentically Aussie style.
