Darksynth coalesced around 2012 when French producers Perturbator and Carpenter Brut began pushing synthwave into faster, more distorted territory inspired by John Carpenter scores, Italian giallo, and 1980s slasher cinema. The aesthetic abandons Outrun's optimistic sunset palette for pentagrams, inverted crosses, neon-blood reds, and VHS-era horror typography. Visually it overlaps with metal and witch house, but the distinguishing texture is the synthesizer arpeggio rendered in low-resolution horror-poster lighting. Fashion follows the music: black band tees with corrupted serif type, leather biker jackets, studded belts, combat boots, and the occasional tactical harness. The look thrives on Bandcamp, Redbubble, and Etsy for graphic merchandise rather than designer fashion. Carpenter Brut's tour merchandise routinely commands resale premiums on Discogs and eBay among collectors.
