Metalhead style took shape in the late 1970s when bikers and Judas Priest fans began customising sleeveless denim and leather jackets with iron-on patches commemorating tours and album art. The battle vest became the central artefact — a wearable archive of allegiance — and remains the genre's most recognisable garment four decades on. Rob Halford's leather costuming and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal codified the rest: tight black jeans, white high-tops or motorcycle boots, studded belts, and long unkempt hair. Subgenres splinter the look (corpse paint and bullet belts for black metal, white high-tops and bandanas for thrash) but the core has barely shifted. Vinted and eBay are flush with vintage band tees pulling triple-digit resale, with Iron Maiden, Slayer, and Metallica reprints driving fast-fashion knockoffs that purists openly reject.

Not punk — metalhead vests prioritise band loyalty patches over political slogans, and the silhouette favours fitted denim over deliberately destroyed bondage trousers.
