Gutter Punk is the dress code of the train-hopping, squat-living, dumpster-diving wing of the punk scene that runs from late-80s American crusty culture through Crimethinc-era zine networks and contemporary travelling-kid circuits. The wardrobe is fundamentally a survival kit: oversized black hoodie under a battered patched leather jacket, baggy or tight black jeans crusted with road grime and reinforced with patches, combat boots wrapped in gaffer or duct tape, bandana, fingerless gloves, a heavy backpack with sleeping roll attached, hand-poked stick-and-poke tattoos covering hands and face, dreadlocks or matted hair, dog companion. The aesthetic overlaps with Crust Punk in dress but is more rootless and street-life-coded — Crust Punks have a band and a venue; Gutter Punks have a spot under a bridge.

Not Crust Punk — Gutter Punk reads more rootless and street-life-coded with a sleeping roll and duct-taped boots; Crust Punk centres band allegiance and squat-scene politics with a defined battle vest.
