Happy hardcore split from breakbeat hardcore in 1991 to 1992 around DJs like Slipmatt, Hixxy, and Sy, retaining the genre's euphoric piano stabs and abandoning the breakbeat for relentless 4/4 kicks at 160 BPM-plus. The scene was strongest in working-class northern England, Scotland, and the Welsh valleys, where promoters like Bonkers, Helter Skelter, and HTID drew arena-sized crowds through the 1990s and 2000s. The wardrobe rejected the kandi-fluffy excess of American raves in favour of mass-market Argos sportswear: Kappa or Adidas tracksuits, Three Lions football shirts, Reebok Classics, slicked Wella Shockwaves fringes, and bucket hats. The look has cycled back through TikTok 'rave revival' content since 2022, dragging vintage Kappa and England 1990 jerseys back into Depop demand.

Not American kandi raver — happy hardcore wears Kappa and football kit instead of fluffy boots, and treats the scene as proudly chav-coded rather than child-coded.
