Midwest Gothic is more a literary and photographic mood than a strict subculture, and it cycles through Tumblr and TikTok every few years as a regional folk-gothic counterpart to Southern Gothic. The reference points: Children of the Corn, the Mothman, abandoned grain silos, the Twin Cities winter, In Cold Blood, Wisconsin Death Trip, the long-flat-empty-highway photos every transplant takes. The wardrobe codes pull from real Midwestern utility — broken-in flannels in muted plaids, faded Levi's, brown duck canvas chore coats, work boots, thermal henleys, knit beanies, Carhartt beanies, Wrangler jackets, slip dresses with cardigans and ankle boots — and gives them a sun-bleached, slightly haunted styling. The look is restrained and unglamorous; the mood is everything.
