About
Riot Grrrl was the early-1990s feminist-punk movement built around Olympia, Washington and Washington DC — Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Heavens to Betsy, Sleater-Kinney, Huggy Bear and a network of zines that put Kathleen Hanna's 'Riot Grrrl Manifesto' into circulation. The aesthetic deliberately weaponised girlhood signifiers against a sexist hardcore scene: babydoll dresses paired with combat or Doc Martens boots, hand-painted slogans across knuckles or stomachs ('SLUT', 'GIRL'), plaid school skirts with ripped tights and clompy boots, pigtail barrettes and hair clips, kneesocks, vintage tees with Sharpie modifications, smudged eyeliner. The look influenced Soft Grunge, Coquette, the entire 'sad girl' Tumblr era and the 2010s indie-sleaze revival. The original scene built community around zines, free shows and the explicit centring of women, queer kids and sexual-violence survivors.
Not Kinderwhore — Riot Grrrl is the broader feminist-punk movement with hand-painted slogans and explicit politics; Kinderwhore is the specific Hole/Babes in Toyland babydoll-dress-and-tiara stage look that grew out of the same scene.
