About
Skate Punk emerged from the cross-pollination of Southern California's hardcore-punk scene and the late-70s skate-park boom, then exploded with the Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords rosters of the 1990s — NOFX, Pennywise, Lagwagon, Bad Religion, the Offspring, Pulley, No Use for a Name. The wardrobe is straightforward and functional: Vans Authentics or Half Cabs, Dickies 874s or baggy chino shorts, plaid boxers visibly above the waistband, band tees and Thrasher Magazine graphics, hoodies tied around the waist, baseball caps backwards, white tube socks pulled mid-shin. Hair is short, often bleached, sometimes liberty-spiked. The aesthetic is unfussed and built for actually skating, which separates it from the goth-punk and crust-punk lineages and aligns it with the broader Californian skater scene.
Not generic Skater — Skate Punk centres the late-90s Epitaph/Fat Wreck Chords music allegiance with band tees and a punk hardcore signal; Skater is the broader contemporary scene without the same musical lineage.
