Solarpunk

Solarpunk is a speculative-fiction movement and aesthetic that emerged on Tumblr around 2012–2014 as a deliberate optimistic antidote to cyberpunk's dystopian determinism. Its premise is that the future does not have to be neon-and-rain noir — it can instead be sun-drenched, vegetal, communal and powered by renewable energy. The visual language fuses Art Nouveau curves, traditional craftsmanship from the Global South, vertical gardens, flowing natural fabrics, bamboo and rattan tech objects, brass solar arrays and Studio Ghibli-inflected pastoralism (Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke). Wardrobe-wise it is loose, breathable and natural-fibre: linen tunics, hand-woven cotton, embroidered shawls, leather sandals, wide-brim straw hats, copper jewellery, plant-dyed scarves, beeswax-and-cotton everything. Solarpunk has built a substantial real-world community around climate writing, permaculture, mutual-aid politics and slow-fashion — making it one of the rare -punks with daily-wear adherents.

Not Cottagecore — Solarpunk is explicitly futurist and politically engaged with climate, energy and labour; Cottagecore is escapist romanticism of an imagined rural past.
