About
Suedehead is the early-1970s British evolution of skinhead style, in which the original cropped scalp grew out into a slightly longer, fuller cut (the 'suede' length, so named because the very-short stubble felt like suede) and the wardrobe smartened up considerably. Where skinhead was working-uniform-direct, Suedehead leaned closer to Mod tailoring: mohair or tonic two-piece suits, button-down dress shirts, three-button single-breasted blazers, Crombie wool overcoats, brogues or loafers (Royal brogues, Loake), and an umbrella as a regular accessory. The female counterpart wore the same quality of tailoring with twin-sets, midi pencil skirts, and crochet tops. Music shifted from ska and reggae to soul, Northern Soul, and early glam. The Suedehead phase was short-lived (roughly 1971-73) before evolving into the smoothies, then into the broader 70s street-fashion landscape, but its codes have been continually revived through Mod Revival, the 2-Tone scene, and the Aime Leon Dore / Drakes menswear revival of the 2010s.
Not Skinhead — Suedehead is the smartened-up early-70s evolution with longer hair, mohair suits, Crombie coats, and a Mod-leaning silhouette.
