Whimsigoth (a portmanteau of 'whimsical' and 'gothic', coined by the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute) is a magical-witchy fashion aesthetic that draws from 1970s mysticism and 1990s gothic fashion. Stevie Nicks is the founding visual figure — her layered skirts, dramatic bell sleeves, lace shawls, witchy hats and abundant jewellery established the template. Other anchors include Practical Magic, The Craft, Charmed and 1990s Anna Sui collections. Signature pieces include velvet maxi dresses, satin slip dresses, velvet chokers, layered crystal pendants, celestial and astrological jewellery (moons, suns, stars, tarot motifs), bell-sleeve blouses, lace overlays and chunky platform boots. The aesthetic took off on TikTok in 2022 and remains durable.
