Dadcore began circa 2017-2018 when Balenciaga under Demna Gvasalia ran chunky 'ugly' sneakers and oversized parkas that redefined high fashion's relationship with suburban menswear. The triple-aughts ridiculed dad fashion; Dadcore reclaims it. The vocabulary is utilitarian and slightly worn-in: chunky New Balance 990s or 2002Rs, Asics Gel-Kayanos, cargo shorts (knee-length, deeply pocketed), polar fleece pullovers, polo shirts, baseball caps, dad jeans, white tube socks pulled high. Layering is loose and functional rather than fashion-coded. By 2024 New Balance had eclipsed Nike in cultural cachet largely on the back of Dadcore. The aesthetic is pointedly anti-precious — the joke and the appeal are the same: clothes designed to be wearable, comfortable and faintly embarrassing.

Not Eclectic Grandpa — Dadcore is utilitarian and athletic-coded (sneakers, cargos, fleece); Eclectic Grandpa is fussier and more ornamented (sweater vests, loafers, prints).
