Dungeon synth originated in the early 1990s when members of the Norwegian black metal scene — particularly Mortiis (ex-Emperor) and Burzum's Varg Vikernes — began producing minimalist synthesizer compositions evoking Tolkien-inflected medieval fantasy. The genre lay dormant until a 2010s Bandcamp-driven revival pulled it into wider underground attention, with tape labels like Out of Season and Hospital Productions releasing prolifically. The aesthetic is built around dragons, knights in plate armour, flickering torch-lit dungeons, and lone wizards in flowing robes — frequently rendered as deliberately crude pencil sketches or AI-generated medieval paintings on cassette J-cards. Practitioners' fashion gestures rather than dictates: hooded wool cloaks for performance, black band tees for daily wear, and a strong overlap with the metalhead and folk-pagan wardrobe. Resale activity is small but devoted, concentrated on Discogs cassettes and Etsy hand-stitched cloaks.
